Why MINEO? Building a Montessori Hub in Northeast Ohio

There is a question we get asked often, in one form or another: Why start a Montessori training center in Northeast Ohio now, and why build it this way?

The honest answer is that MINEO was never conceived as simply a place to train teachers. It was conceived as a hub — a place where all things Montessori could flow through, gather, and be put in service of a single purpose: supporting the work of being an aid to life, for people of every age and ability.

More Than a Training Center

Most Montessori training centers exist for one reason: to prepare adults for the classroom or in their work with children. That work matters enormously, and it will always be central to what we do. High-fidelity, teacher education is foundational to MINEO's mission, and we take seriously our responsibility to bring that caliber of training to a region that has not had ready access to it.

But if teacher training were the whole of our mission, we would be building something much smaller than what Northeast Ohio actually needs.

MINEO was built on a different premise: that a training center can be something more than a pipeline for credentials. It can be a hub — a connective space where Montessori philosophy touches everything it can reach. Teachers, assistants, parents, grandparents, therapists, school leaders, aftercare staff, community partners — all of them are already part of the web of relationships that surround the people they serve, whatever their age or ability. A hub honors that web instead of narrowing it down to a single role in a single classroom.

This is why MINEO is home to the Power of Possibility framework and the Inclusion Innovation Workshop. Alongside a diverse range of offerings, MINEO has a vision to offer many opportunities to materialize and experience Dr. Montessori’s work in action.  Aligning our work in this way is an expression of our belief that Montessori is not only a method for the classroom, and not only a philosophy of childhood — it is a way of seeing and responding to human development, across every age and ability, and across the full range of environments where that development unfolds. Before we do, we observe. What we have observed is that development doesn't happen in isolation; it happens in relationships, in community, in the everyday fabric of how people support one another, at every stage of life.

A Hub for Community, Not Just Curriculum

Northeast Ohio has long needed more than a place to send teachers for training. It has needed a center of gravity — somewhere that Montessori community could form, deepen, and grow outward. That is what we mean when we call MINEO a hub.

Cleveland sits at the center of a region rich with possibility: Northeast Ohio, and beyond it, Pennsylvania, Michigan, New York, and West Virginia. Educators, families, and organizations across this broader region share a commitment to human development across the lifespan — from the earliest years of childhood through adolescence and into adulthood — but they have not always had a shared home base to gather around. Part of why MINEO exists is to become that home base — a place where Montessori community is built and expanded intentionally, in service of people of every age and ability.

This means our work goes well beyond the credentialing calendar. It means offering experiential opportunities that let people encounter Montessori not as an abstract philosophy but as a mindset and a way of life. Opportunities to experience Montessori as something that shapes how we support the people we care for and care about, whether that's in a classroom, a family, a care setting, or a community organization. It means creating room for reflection and collaboration, not just instruction. It means building the kind of Montessori community where relationship is not supplemental to the work — relationship is the work, for children and adults alike. 

Partnerships That Already Exist — and the Ones We Haven't Imagined Yet

A hub is only as strong as what flows through it, and we are grateful for the partnerships already helping to shape MINEO's early years. Our relationship with Montessori Development Partnerships (MDP), which operates the Stonebrook Montessori Hub, gives us a physical and organizational home built for exactly this kind of collaborative work. Our connection to the Montessori Care Partner Collaborative (MCPC) reflects our commitment to weaving inclusion and care into everything we do, across ages and abilities. PDK Educational Consulting ground us in the day-to-day work of this community, and the Power of Possibility framework ties all of it together — the connective thread running through every partnership, every workshop, and every course we offer.

But just as important are the partnerships we haven't imagined yet. A hub, by its nature, is unfinished — it exists to keep making new connections. We are actively looking outward: toward therapists and support-services professionals, toward aftercare and community-care organizations, toward schools, elder care providers, disability services organizations, and educators across the wider region who have not yet had a reason to connect with a Montessori’s work or a Montessori training center. If your work touches the lives of children, adolescents, adults, families, or the people who support them, there is very likely a place for you in this hub — even if we haven't had the chance to discover that together yet.

Montessori as a Web

Dr. Montessori did not describe her work as a set of techniques to be mastered in isolation, or as something bound to a single age or stage of life. She described it as an aid to life — something that only makes sense in connection to the whole of a person's development, at any age and any ability, and to the community that surrounds them. That is the spirit we've tried to build into MINEO from the beginning.

Montessori is not a single thread. It's a web — one that connects teachers to families, families to therapists, therapists to schools, schools to communities, and communities to one another. MINEO exists to be a place where that web can be tended, strengthened, and extended further than it has reached before in Northeast Ohio.

That is why MINEO. Not simply to train teachers — though we will train them well — but to build the hub this region has been missing: a place where Montessori, in all its forms, can flow through and be put in service of supporting life itself.
